We covered about 400 klm in the bus today (Friday), and according to Steve's pedometer we added another 12 klm walking. We left the Tuscan hills this morning and headed north with the first stop being Verona.
Of course the city is the setting for the fictional story of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and the tour guides play this up. But aside from this schtick it's really quite an interesting place to visit.
Wonderful vistas and pretty streets abound.
One of the frescos around the main market square.
And a Romanesque Arena which is still in use today.
The place is a zoo and we find out today is a national holiday to celebrate the WWII liberation of Italy. Celebrations are everywhere, including concerts at the Verona arena.

After Verona we head east to Venice or "Venezia" as it's known here. Typical canal streets like the one below, make it a hard city to navigate on foot. It's easy to walk down a narrow but pretty lane way, only to find out it dead ends at a canal, with no way across. And that happened more than once to the Kopysh clan as we explored on our own today.
Saint Mark's square was the site of another liberation celebration today. Fortunately we arrived as the party was breaking up. We are told that tomorrow, there are celebrations to honor Saint Mark himself in the square. Should be an interesting day.
