Newfoundland - Day 1

Flight from Toronto to Deer Lake Newfoundland was brief (little more than 2 hours), and uneventful.
The view on our approach to he airport was a spectacular vista of rock, trees, lakes and hills.

A 40 minute drive from the airport to Corner Brook (not cornerbrook... a subtle but distinct pause is evident in the local dialect), takes us along the 30 mile length of Deer Lake and through the ski resort at Marble Mountain. Unfortunately my camera was tucked away in the back of the shuttle van so I can't share the wonderful view with you.

We arrive at our hotel around 2pm local time and the girls are already having a laugh, I think at Garys and my expense.

Scenic walking trails begin right outside the hotel doors and we take advantage right away. The views along the gravel paths don't disappoint.

For anyone who has read the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy...  this has to have been the kind of scene that inspired the "Ents" (walking talking trees), in the story. Would have sworn that the rocks are only stepping stones for the trees.

Of course a long walk is deserving of a reward at the end of the trail.

Our server at the Crown and Moose (Karen), was a real peach and was full of that much talked about Newfie warmth and friendliness.

Tomorrow has us touring around the Corner Brook area to see Captain James Cook historic site, Bay of Islands, Frenchman's Cove, Lark Harbour and the Pearl Islands.

So far, Newfoundland is "not a bad bit nice".
